Could this be the future of Computer/PC/Laptop?

I was not taken aback by the pen sized PC concept that was forwarded to me via email by one of my friends. The pen sized and pen look alike gadget transforms to a fully featured PC that works on bluetooth. I believe this concept had been there for over 2 years now (and probably never made it to a workable production). The email and images were doing rounds for quite some time and I faintly remember seeing this almost 2 years back.

I am not sure about the current status of this product but have no doubt that this could one day become feasible when the technology is ripe and go on to revolutionaize the future of PC/Latop technology. It may seem that such creations are part of sci-fi movies where computerised screen is projected virtually and all actions are performed by interacting with the virtual input screen. But what you see in below photos show what Japense brains were upto in shaping the technology to make such dreams come real. The photos should not be seen as showcasing a working product but as an illustration of the concept (I have no way of verifying the authenticity of these photos!). See photos and you will know what I am talking about.

The product concept looks really cool but I can foresee few issues those who developed the concept could have faced when they attempted to implement a working prototype. The foremost that comes to my mind is the power requirements. Has technology advanced and aligned enough to come up with minuscule batteries that would power up the projections and cpu processing. I doubt so. Also how error prone would be the virtual keyboard and how it could interpret finger movements, depressions and mouse movements etc from random hand movements. These are things to ponder about. Suprisingly I was unable to find of the fate of this concept on net.

For now enjoy the photos and be dazzled by what could be your future in case you have not seen these images before ….

  1. I can’t wait for this! It will make updating things from on top of my pole so much easier. Currently I have to drag my laptop up there every day.

  8. Could? This WILL be the future… it has to be!

I have seen another concept model around, that was UFO shaped, but the pen gadget is the way to go. Really cool looking!

For this pen concept, I am willing to ditch my MacBookPro… oops, did I just say that?

  11. I saw something *similar* during my last trip to the Microsoft campus.

A pen computer would be easier to get through TSA security…

  12. If the device had high sensitivity accelerometers within it, it could be a hand held device and project its image upon a wall, for example. The image would be stabilized as the accelerometer would compensate the projectors for user motions, meanwhile the tilt could be used as a pointing device. So when the user moves and redirects the pen, the projected display stays perfectly still, but the mouse cursor would move across it and this, in my opinion could be nearly the ultimate personal computer… especially if the screen could be projected in mid air.

    I think I have a picture somewhere

  14. That would be cool, I could type on a text book. Um… do you think a book on the keyboard would mess it up?
